Growing Up in Donegal

Síle grew up in Letterkenny with a grandfather who was a retired mountain guide. He taught her to read the land, to respect the weather, and to find beauty in places most people walked past without looking. Those childhood explorations of Donegal's coastlines and inland valleys became the foundation for everything she's done since. It wasn't just about the walking — it was about understanding how to move through a landscape with intention and respect.

From Conservation to Accessibility

After finishing her degree in Environmental Science at University College Dublin, Síle worked with the Irish Wildlife Trust, managing conservation projects across northwest Ireland. But in 2011, something shifted. She started volunteering with a local pensioners' hiking group, and quickly realized how few quality resources existed for older walkers who wanted genuine adventure without excessive difficulty. The guides that existed treated accessibility like an afterthought. She decided to change that.

Over 14 years, Síle's developed a reputation for two things: honesty and detail. She measures gradients with proper equipment, tests rest facilities, walks routes in different seasons, and talks to locals about what changes throughout the year. She holds advanced certification in accessibility auditing through the Irish Wheelchair Association, which means she doesn't guess about surface conditions or distances — she documents them properly. Her approach combines scientific rigour with genuine storytelling about why these places matter culturally and geologically.
